Kaylin's Audiologist Appointment
Kaylin is nearly two years old and still not talking and this has been a concern with me for a while.
So..
Kaylin went off for her hearing tests yesterday and she would NOT let the woman put any of the instruments NEAR her ears. So we moved on to do the visual reinforcement/play audiometry test which involved a serious of high and low tones and as soon as she pointed towards the sound or turned to look at the sound, lights would go on and barney would sing and dance. She finally clicked on to what we wanted her to do and the results came back that her hearing is normal in the high tones but a little weaker in the low tones which is also normal for her age. She’s still developing and audio skills at this age. The is not the only test so its not conclusive yet.
The Audiologist wants to see her every Wednesday so that she can teach me how to encourage her to express herself verbally as she has no problems with understanding which is the basis of communication skills. She actually has a bigger vocab than I thought she just can’t seem to form the words properly which I think is my fault because I don’t spend enough time with her (like I did with Megan). For example when she is finished her drink or food she’ll say “Ssshht” which means finished. She has her own little language and says about 15 things that I’ve noted down so far. The fact that I make everything easy for her by knowing what she wants and just giving it to her. I need to make her work for it now. Lisa (the Audiologist) is teaching me how to do this. I need to explain what I’m doing to her all the time so that she clicks on. I need to “play dumb” when she "asks" me for something and encourage her to tell me in words what she needs. Lots of homework to do but I’m willing…we started last night already.
So we’re off to see her every Wednesday so that Kaylin can learn to trust her so that we can complete the hearing tests. We only managed to do the one and she really wants to make sure that her hearing is not impaired in any way…so its going to be a long-term thing. We also need to practise letting us look in her ears this week so that by the time we go next week she’s comfortable and understands that we’re not going to hurt her.
