Megan's Wizard of Oz Concert

Megan's first concert in "Big School" (Grade 1) was a HUGE hit.  

Their theme was The Wizard of Oz and THRASS reading programme, which they learn at school.  They combined the two to create an awesome production of Dorothy Learning to Read helped along by a Nun named Maria.

It was so well-thought out and the decorations were outstanding. The props and costumes were lovely too. The teachers had gone to so much trouble and the students were so excited to perform for us.

Megan was the "K" for Kitten and sang the Cat, Kitten THRASS song and danced along.  It was so precious.  I couldn't help but get teary-eyed and I was absolutely bursting with pride.  Kaylin was sitting on Daddy's lap in the audience clapping along to all the songs that she knew because their nursery school also introduced THRASS a few years ago - so all the stuff was familiar to her.  She applauded and waved to her sister (but then again so did we).

Another two nights of performances and then we're done for the week.

Grandparents Day at School was a Wash Out!

Megan and Kaylin's school (Castillian) perform an annual mini-concert for Grand Parents and today was the day!

The school invite all the granny's and grandpa's to watch each class do a poem and song and afterwards they get to go their classroom, meet the teacher and the children present them with a special gift that the children have made. This year it was brightly coloured hand-painted shopping bags. The Grand parents loved them!

Afterward we invited them to enjoy some tea and cake and can take their grand children home for the afternoon. The first two classes got to say their poems and sing their songs with a sprinkling of rain thrown in. The the heavens opened and everyone got soaked to the bone. It was a freakish sudden thundershow that chilled everyone and put a damper on the entire day. I felt so sorry for all the old granny's and grandpas running around in the rain looking for cover.

All the eats and goodies got soaked wet and it was such a disaster! Its usually such a fun, relaxed and special day for the grand parents and the children getting to show off their school, their class, their school books, what they do on a day-to-day basis. This year it was chaos. What a disappointment. Pity we can't order the weather.

The Girls School Concert 2008

The girls school concert was a hit!

The theme was "Local is Lekker" and they had each class do a theme from the difficult cultures we have in South Africa. The songs were all south african and ranged from Blou Bulle to Ipi Tombi, Kaapse Klopse, Special Star, etc.

Kaylin's Potty Class did Bietjie, Bietjie Lam with Teacher Natasha. Kaylin came on stage dressing in a bright orange Tshirt and demin mini skirt and stood in line with her friends totally bewildered. I made the HUGE mistake of waving at her - she caught my eye and started howling. She spent the rest of her "Performance" nuzzled into Teacher Natasha's neck and drowned out the music with her screaching...poor wee mite was totally overwhelmed. She's still so wee. But nevertheless she tried!

Megan's Class did 'n Volkspele Medley with a Bollywood theme. The girls dressed in traditional saris with red dots on their foreheads and the boys in jeans with colourful cumberbands. Megan obviously refused to wear the sari (the tomboy that she is) but you know what, whatever makes her happy! They did a lovely little indian-type dance with lots of head bobbing and swishing around. Megan was a star as usual and knew ALL the moves backwards! She thoroughly enjoyed her performance and was so excited to be "a star" for the evening. I was so proud of her.

Reading, 'righting and 'rithmetic are the basics of good education.

They are the skills our minds will use to live a life of exploration.

For the future is filled with treasures far greater than silver or gold -

A wealth of knowledge to discover - the riches of wisdom untold.

For paving the path to all my tomorrows with hope in the next generation!
